Please send your answers to the problem covers illustrated on this web page, and any further discussion of previous answers posted on this page to Greg Sutherland as well.
March 03, 2006 - Route Agent Irv Heimburger submits the above cover in an attempt to identify the meaning of the red colored pencil '32' and '12 1/2 CENTS' hand-stamp. The question is where they were applied and why? As can be seen, the cover was posted at Hampton, New Hampshire, 4- Oct-1870, 6¢ and 30¢ 1869 stamps, routed 'via Marseilles' to Anjer, Java. Red '32' upper middle, and '12 1/2' hand-stamped in the lower middle. London PAID 17 OC 70. Back stamped Anjer 29-Nov-1870. PF 394217. Signed Ashbrook.
Any ideas? Send them in.
Below is a listing of previously submitted covers. As this list grows, you will see some have been solved (Green), while others have not been (Tan). Please check back often for new postulates.
