The popularity of NAPEX 2024 was reflected in the large number of exhibits. 21 different Society member exhibits won awards at the show with members winning the top three awards.

Pat Stilwell-Walker took the Multi-frame Grand Award for “Baltimore Postal History: from Colonial Times Until June 30, 1851”. She also won Multi-frame Large Gold; the Collector’s Club of NY Multi-frame US Classic Pre-2nd Series award; and the USPCS Medal.

Mark Schwartz’s “The New York Postmaster Provisional” took the Multi-frame Reserve Grand along with a Multi-frame Large Gold.
Peter Schwartz – no relationship to Mark! – won the Single-frame Grand Award and a Single-frame Large Gold for “The Earliest Black Portrayals on US Stamps 1864–1872”.

Multi-frame Large Golds were won by

• Roger Brody for “America’s Embossed Revenue Stamps” (also the APS Research Medal).
• Marvin and Judith Platt for “The Columbian Envelopes of 1893” (also USSS Statue of Freedom Award).
• William Fort for “Pan American Airlines’ FAM-5 Air Mail Routes 1929 – 1945” (also the Collector’s Club of NY Multi-frame US Classic Post 2nd Series).

Multi-frame Golds were won by

• Randy Smith for “Coping with Adversity: How Southerners Adapted to Wartime Paper and Stamp Shortages” (also the AAPE Creativity Award; and the NSDA Award for the Most Popular Exhibit)
• John Hotchner for “United States Postal Counterfeits – The Classic Period to Modern Times, 1895-2004” (also the APS Medal of Excellence 1940-1980 Material; and the NAPEX Harris Leonard Award). There was no faking this exhibit!
• Alfredo Frohlich for “1914-1919 – German Soldiers Captured in China; Japan Internment: Their Mail Use”.

Multi-frame Large Vermeils were won by

• James Anderson for “Switzerland World War I Soldier Stamps”.
• Donald Getzin for “Varieties of the U.S. 3-cent Washington Stamp, Issue of 1851-57”.
• Robert Toal for “Mail Souvenir Cards by Wirths 1897-1904”.

Terry Hursh won Multi-frame Vermeil for “Art Deco Influence on European Philately” (also the ATA First Award; and the NAPEX Stephen Luster Award).

Single-frame Large Gold was won by

• Mark Schwartz for “The Use of Boston’s PAID in Grid Cancels. 1851-1859”.
• Larry Lyons for “Valentines Delivered by US Local Post”.

Mark Banchik won Single-frame Gold for “Mexico: ’75 $4.30 Strawberry ‘Exporta’ Stamp”.

COLOPEX

COLOPEX 2024 was put on by the Columbus Philatelic Club May 31 and June 1st. This year’s event was held in Worthington, Ohio at the Worthington DoubleTree hotel.

 

Afredo Frohlich won Multi-frame Large Gold for “Delaware Postal History – 1732 to 1847” as well as the APS Award of Excellence Pre-1900; the American Philatelic Congress Book; and the US Cancellation Club Award.

Terry Hursh won Multi-frame Large Silver for “The Postal Issues of Faisal II of Iraq 1939-1958: The Life and Death of a Young King” as well as the AAPE Jean Benninghoff Encouragement Award and the Women Exhibitors Sterling Achievement Award.

MILCOPEX 2024

MILCOPEX 2024 was held at the Brookfield Conference Center in Brookfield, Wisconsin June 14 and 15. The show was organized and run by the Milwaukee Philatelic Society.

Vern Morris won the Multi-frame Grand Award for “Evolution of American Mail 1685 to 1799”. He also was awarded Multi-frame Large Gold; the APS Award of Excellence: Pre-1900; and the AAPE Award of Excellence: Treatment.

Appropriate to the show location, Larry Nix won Multi-frame Gold and the APS Research Award for “Wisconsin’s State Level Library Agencies”.

Again, very appropriate to the show’s location in Wisconsin, Ralph Nafziger‘s “The 3¢ 1934 Perforate Wisconsin Tercentenary” earned a Multi-frame Gold.

John Hotchner won Multi-frame Vermeil for “U. S. Flag Patriotic Covers of the Spanish-American War Era”.

James Cate won Single-frame Large Vermeil for “Confederate Military Mail – Chattanooga 1862-1864”.

The Westpex show took place in Burlingame, California, just south of San Francisco and a short ride from SFO. The theme for this year’s show was the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

The Single-frame Grand was won by Michael Mahler for his “Stamp Tax on Nevada Territory Stock Certificates: the “25c Blaze of Glory” (also Single-frame Large Gold).

Three other Multi-frame Large Gold awards were won by Society members:

• Michael Mahler for “ California’s “Gold Rush Revenues”. Aristocrats of American Fiscal Philately, a Fiscal History” (also APS Award of Excellence: Pre 1900)
• Alfredo Frohlich for “ The United States of Colombia 1868-1881” (also COPAPHIL – Debby Friedman Award of Excellence)
• Timothy O’Conner for “ Postal History of the Thirteen Original Colonies 1634-1782” (also San Diego Stamp Show Award of Merit).

Gold continued with three members winning Single-Frame Large Gold:

Chip Gliedman won the Single-frame Grand and Large Gold for “Leominster, Mass. Provisional Postage Due and Instructional Labels” (also the APS Medal of Excellence, Pre-1900 and the Auxiliary Markings Club Award of Merit)!

Three Society Members won Multi-frame Large Gold.

• Tony Dewey for “The U.S. Alphabet-Denominated Rate-Change Series: 1978 – 1998” (also American Philatelic Congress Award Excellence in Write-up; APS Medal of Excellence, Post-1980; Errors, Freaks, Oddities Collectors’ Club First Place; United States Stamp Society Statue of Freedom Award).
• Patrick Walters for “The United States Governmental Flights (1918-1927)” (also the APS Medal of Excellence, 1900-1940 and American Air Mail Society Large Gold).
• Dr. Murray Abramson for “Geographic Expansion of Commercial U.S. Mail To Foreign Destinations Via Airmail (1920-41)” (also the APS Research Medal and American Air Mail Society Large Gold).

Tony Dewey won Multi-frame Gold and American Air Mail Society Gold for “Rattlesnake Island Local Post, 1966 -1976”.

Michael Clark won Multi-frame Large Vermeil for “The United States Red Cross Issue of 1931” (also American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors Award of Honor – Gold Pin).

Tony Dewey won Single-frame Large Gold for “Swiss Official Stamps for the International Refugee Organization, 1950 – 1952”.

Single-frame Gold was won by Tony Dewey for “The Postal Stationery of the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA) for Netherlands New Guinea” and Patrick Walters for “Michigan Pioneer Air Mail” (also American Air Mail Society Gold).
