
This year’s National Philatelic Exhibition (NAPEX) ran June 2 – 4th in McLean, Virginia, a short drive from the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C.
Mark Schwartz brought home the bacon, ur, the single-frame Grand and an accompanying Large Gold for his “The Special Arrangement between Liverpool and the U. S. – 1843-1848.”.
Ralph Nafziger’s “The 3c 1936 Oregon Territory Issue” took multi-frame Large Gold (also the AFDCS Award and the NAPEX Stephen Luster Award for Excellence).
Multi-frame Gold was won by Robert Mayo for “By the Way of Richmond” (also the APS Research Medal) as well as Kenneth Gilbart for “United States Ten Cent Issue 1861“.
Single-frame Large Gold was won by Scott Steward for “U.S. Domestically Mailed Circulars from 1845 to 1863” as well as by Richard Taschenberg for “1861 Bicolor Envelope Usage” (also the Virginia Philatelic Award for Excellence).
Single-frame Gold was won by Robert Toal for each of two exhibits “American Postcards Evolve from Postal Cards: 1868-1873” and “The Goodsell Postcards of 1880”.
Randy Smith’s “Coping with Adversity: How Southerners Adapted to Wartime Paper Shortages” won the AAPE – Creativity Award and the Collectors Club of Chicago’s Gold Medallion Award.
