John Hotchner took top honors at the Garfield Perry “March Party”, winning the single-frame Grand Award and a Large Gold medal for “The Mid-19th Century Start of Perforating in Great Britain and the United States”. For his multi-frame exhibit, “U.S. Postal Counterfeits-The First 100 Years, 1895-2004”, John also won a Large Gold medal.
Garfield Perry 2023 Party
The 2023 “March Party” was held in Cleveland, Ohio (Strongsville) March 17-19. USPCS members did well with 7 members winning awards for 9 exhibits.
Robert Meegan won the USPCS Medal and a Gold for his exhibit, “The United States Large Bank Note Issues Move the Mail”.
Matthew Liebson won a Large Gold for “Development of the United States Postal Savings System 1911-1970”. He also was awarded the Collectors Club of Chicago Medallion and The National Stamp Dealers Association Award for Outstanding Presentation. Matthew’s exhibit “Integral Rate Postmarks of Cincinnati, Ohio” won a single-frame Gold.
John Barwis won a Gold, the American Philatelic Congress Award, and the Military Postal History Award for his exhibit, “American Forces in Korea 1950-1953.”
Other members winning Large Gold awards were Alfredo Frohlich with “Columbia – The Last Classic Issue of 1866” and Richard Malmgren for “Hawaiian Postal Cards”.
Single-frame Gold was won by James Cate for “Confederate Military Mail – Chattanooga 1862-1865”.
St. Louis Stamp Expo
This year’s St Louis Stamp Expo was held March 24 – 25th in scenic St. Louis, MO.
Anthony Dewey’s “The U.S. Alphabet-Denominated Rate-Change Series, 1978-1998” cleaned up winning the Grand and a Large Gold. Anthony’s exhibit also won a series of specialized awards including the APS Award 1940-1980, the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors Treatment award, and the United States Stamp Society Award.
Single-frame Large Golds were won by Robert Hohertz for his “The American Phototype Two-Cent Instructive Clauses 1867-1872” and Anthony Dewey for his “Swiss Official Stamps for the International Refugee Organization, 1950-1952”.
John Young won Vermeil for each of two exhibits, “Polar Icepick #1” and “Picketing Antarctica”. Gerry Oberst also won Vermeil for his “Jean-Michel Folon: Postal Artist”
Gold medals were awarded to Darrell Ertzberger for “British Honduras Postal Stationery 1879-1931; Alfredo Frohlich for “The Short Lived LANSA Story”; and Fran Adams for “UN Special Committee on Palestine 1947”.
