Sescal
There was a virtual exhibit held in conjunction with Sescal 2022 in Glendale, Calif on Oct. 28-30.
The Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal were won by Matt Kewriga for his “Danish West Indies Foreign Mail to UPU” (also the APS Medal of Excellence: Pe-1900; and Postal History Society Medal) He will compete for the Multiframe C of C next year at Hartford.
Other members winning Large Gold included Mike Mahler for the following four exhibits: “Once was not enough: Documents of the U.S. Civil War Stamp Tax Era 1862-1863, Subject to Multiple Taxes” (also the ARA Best Revenue Exhibit Award); “Rebel Documents, Yankee Stamps: How the Union Collected its Stamp Taxes in the Confederacy during Wartime Occupation and by Postwar Retroactive Stamping”; the SF “The $3.50 Stamps of the U.S. Civil War Era”; and the SF “The U.S. $15 Mortgage Stamp 1862-1872: a Fiscal History Perfect Storm”. Also Tony Dewey for “The A Rate-Change Stamps of 1978”.
Gold Medals were awarded to Scott Prior for both his “U.S. – France Letter Communication 1783-1875”; and for his “Gold Rush Express Companies Serving the Gibsonville Ridge, Plumas and Sierra Counties, Calif.” (also the USPCS Medal). And to Fran Adams for “Atlantic Meeting 1941” (also The American Philatelic Congress Award
and the ATA First Award).
There was also a literature exhibit at Sescal. Trish Kaufmann won a Large Gold Medal and the Reserve Grand Award for “Jenkins Express – a New Listing”.
Roger Brody also won a Large Gold for “instructions for the Distributors Part I & Part II”.
Winning Gold Medals were Mike Mahler for “$2.50 Inland Exchange Color Wheel Revisited”; Peter Schwartz and Calvin Mitchell for “Tobacco Stamps of 1868-1869 and African American Portraiture”; and Ralph Nafziger for “On the Oregon Trail.”
Large Vermeil Medals were awarded to John Bowman for “Questions about Boyd’s City Express” and to Charles DiComo for “”H. H. Warner & Co. ‘Safe Remedies’ Major Double Transfer of Central Vignette on 6c Medicine Stamp, RS258dt”.
Mike Mahler, Don Woolworth and Herman Ivester won a Vermeil Award for “The Kountze Brothers, Bankers of the High Plains: Their Revenue Stamped Paper and its Antecedents.”
Les Lanphear won a Silver Medal for “Creating Your Own Census.”
Finally, Charles DiComo won a Bronze Medal for “The History of the Ill-Fated Dirigible Akron and the Discovery of a scarce ‘Souvenir of Balloon Akron’ Fabric Postcard from 1912”.
Aerophilately 2022
This special WSP show was held at Bellefonte on Nov. 4-6. Even though the subject matter falls out of the scope of the USPCS, several of our members participated and won medals, including the top two award winners.
Cheryl Ganz won a Large Gold medal and the H R Harmer Grand Award (also the German Philatelic Society Gold award) for “Zeppelins & the United States”. Pat Walters won the Robert A. Siegel Single Frame Grand Award for “New Jersey Pioneer Airmail”;
Other members winning Large Gold included Mike Farrell for his SF “Pioneer Airmail of Indiana” (also the Jim Graue Special prize); Murray Abramson for “Expansion of US Airmail to Foreign Destinations” (also the Johnathan Johnson Special Prize); William Fort for “Wartime Transpacific Airmail Routes 1939-1946” (also the APS award for 1940-1980 material); and Alfredo Frohlich for “SCADTA Airmail 1929-1931”.
Gold Medals went to Dr. Steven Berlin for the SF “Terrorism Impact on the Mails”; David Steidley for the SF “Airmail between the U.S. and Iraq 1940-1941” (also the AAPE Gold Award of Honor): Tony Dewey for “Rattlesnake Island Local Post 1966-1976” (also the Don Jones Special Prize); Gordon Eubanks for “South Atlantic Air Mail Service between North America, Africa and Asia”.
Florex
The last WSP show of 2022 was held on December 2-3 at Deland, Florida, north of Orlando.
Our Society VP, Vern Morris, won a Large Gold Medal and the Multi-frame Grand for “Evolution of Blood’s Local Post, 1842 to 1862” (also the USSS Statue of Freedom Award).
Also winning Large Gold Medals were Bruce Roberts for “Arkansas: Territory to 1870 (also the USPCS medal); John Hotchner for “Mail to and From American Prisoners of War, During and After the Korean War” (also the American Philatelic Congress award and APS Research Award); Earl Toops for “The Development and Use of the Provisional Issues of South Vietnam”; and Vern Morris for “1776”.
A Gold Award went to Alfredo Frohlich for “Survivors of SCADTA’s Von Krohn Aircrash, March 10, 1934”.
A Large Vermeil Award went to David Mayo for the SF “Non-Denominated make up rate stamps of the United States” (also the APS Award of Excellence post-1980).
A Vermeil Award went to Bruce Roberts for the SF “Arkansas Fancy Cancels 1929-1935”
And Bruce Roberts also won a Large Silver Medal for “Pan American Airmail Test – November 1, 1946”.
