This is the annual FDC show that took place on August 3-5 in Atlanta. Even though the material shown was 20th century, many of our Classics Society members collect and exhibit both 19th and 20th century material.
Ken Nilsestuen won a Large Gold Medal for “The Minnesota Territorial Stamp – 1949” and the AFDCS Winfred M. Grand Award for Best Cachets FDCs. Large Vermeil Medals were awarded to Peter LaPlaca for “The 3c Connecticut Tercentenary Issue of 1935” (also the APS Research Award0 and Ralph Nafziger for “The 3c Perforated Wisconsin Tercentenary Issue.
Balpex
Held on Labor Day weekend in Hunt Valley Maryland, Mark Schwartz won a Large Gold Medal and the Single Frame Grand (also the AAPE Award of Excellence – Epilogue) for “Boston’s Use of the 1847 Issue”; and Marvin and Judith R. Platt, won a Large Gold Medal and the Reserve Grand Award for “The Columbian Envelopes of 1893” (also the UPSS Marcus White Award).
Other members winning Large Gold Medals were Bob Meegan for “United States Domestic Letter Rates from the Act of 1792 to October 1, 1883” (also the Postal History Society Award and the United States Philatelic Classics Society Medal); Randolph Smith for “Rally ‘Round the Flag”; and Richard Taschenberg for his single frame “The 10 cent U.S. Envelopes of 1870 -1874” (also Collector’s Club of Chicago award and the best exhibit by a BPS member).
Gold Medals were awarded to Darrell Ertzberger for “Compliments of the Season: Christmas & New Years Greetings from U.S. Rural Carriers”; Larry T. Nix for “The Library of Congress & Copyright 1865 – 1930” (also the Best Two Frame Exhibit); Mark Schwartz for “The 5 Cent Virginia Dare Stamp of 1937 – A “Traditional” First Day Exhibit”; and John Schorn for the SF “The 1967 Disarmament Stamps of the United Nations” (also the BPS Rimma Skiarevski Award (stamps).
Gannon Sugimura with “The Evolution of Hawaiian Circular Date Cancels to 1900” won a Large Vermeil Medal (also the Best Three Frame Exhibit).
A Vermeil Medal was awarded to Bob Toal for “American Souvenir Company Postcards”.
Omaha
The Omaha Stamp Show was held the weekend of Sept. 8-9. Bill DePaolo won a Large Gold Medal and the Reserve Grand Award for “The Prexie Coils” (also the APS Medal of Excellence for 1941-1980, and the AAPE Epilogue Award). Mick Hadley won a Large Gold Medal and the Single Frame Grand Award for “Uses of the 1908 U.S. Coils”.
Other members winning Large Gold Medals were Rich Drews for “Lundy Island: The Early Years (also the APS 1900-1940 Medal of Excellence); and Bob Hohertz for “There Are (Almost) No Olate Flaws on American Phototype Imprints” (also the APS Research Award, the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society Medal, The ARA Award and the GPS Specialty Award).
Gold Medals were won by Tim Wait for both “Early Rockford Illinois Postal Markings” and the SF “1862 Insurance Tax”; and Fran Adams for both “Dino Indicia, the Initial Designs” and “Cancellation Devices of the International Institute of Agriculture”.
Seapex
Held In Tukwila, Washington on Sept. 14-16, a Large Gold Medal and the Grand Award was won by Tim O’Connor for “Postal History of the Thirteen Colonies, 1675-1782”. Also winning a Large Gold Medal was Ross Towle for “Chile Postal Stationery: Essays, aproofs, Specimens, Samples” (also the UPSS Marcus White Award).
Gold Medals were awarded to Tony Wawrukiewicz for both “U. S. Customs Duties Collection, 1907-1980s” and “The Ways U. S. Postage Due Stamps Were Used, 1879-1986” (also the Auxiliary Marking Club Award of Merit).
A Vermeil Medal was awarded to David Snow for “The 1876 Centennial Exposition Issue of Postal Entires
