Three WSP shows were held over a 30-day period starting early September and USPCS members were prominent in the Palmares.
Omaha
USPCS Members took the top two awards at the Omaha Stamp Show on Sept. 9-10. Bob Hohertz took a Large Gold medal and the Grand Award at the Omaha Stamp Show for his exhibit “Revenue Stamped Paper of the Spanish American War Tax Era” (also the USSS Statue of Freedom award); and Francis Adams won a Gold Medal and the Single Frame Grand Award for “The Charter of the United Nations” (also the ATA Single Frame Award).
Other members winning Gold medals included Gary Hendren for “St. Louis Street Car Mail 1892-1915” (also the APS Research Medal); Mike Ley for “Burma: The Issues of the Republic 1948 to 1962” (also the German Philatelic Society Special award and the India Study Circle Award); and Hal Vogel for “1838-42 Wilkes Antarctic Expedition: Its Many [often unfavorable] Facets (also the Chicago Collectors Club award).
A Large Vermeil medal was awarded to Bob Hohertz for “What the R’s Are” and a Silver Bronze medal was given to Bob McKain for “8Cent Registry Rate 1874-1875”.
Milcopex
This event, sponsored by the Milwaukee Philatelic Society, was held at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza at the airport on Sept. 15-17.
Congratulations to USPCS member Dan Undersander for winning a Large Gold medal and the Single Frame Grand for “The World’s First Commemorative Stamped Envelope – the 1876 Centennial” (Dan also won the UPSS Single Frame Award).
Other members winning Large Gold medals were Alfredo Frohlich for “Colombia: The Last Classic Issue – 1866” (also the APS Pre-1900 Award of Excellence); Tim Wait for two single frame exhibits – “1862 Insurance Tax” (also the USPCS Medal) and “Adhesive Stamps Used to Pay the 2-Cent Tax on U.S. Bank Checks 1862-1883”; and Bob Hohertz for his single frame “Why Was There a 1 1/2-Cent Prexie?”
Gold medals were awarded to members Larry Nix for “America’s Membership Libraries 1731-1920” (also the William J. Uihein Award for Best Americana); and Ross Towle for “U.S. Postal Service PC Postage and Information-Based Indicia” (also the APS post-1980 Medal and Meter Stamp Award).
A Large Vermeil medal went to Larry Nix for “Hiram E. Deats – Philatelist & Collector Extraordinaire” and Silver medals were awarded to Ken Trettin for “Customs Cancellations on U.S. Revenue Stamps of the Civil War Period” and Bob Hohertz for “Where the R’s Are” (also the AAPE Award of Honor).
IndyPex
This WSP show was held the first weekend of October at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds and Exhibition Center in Noblesville, Indiana.
Winning Large Gold awards were Rich Drews for “Lundy Island – The Early Years” (also the Indiana Stamp Club 20th Century Award) and Bill Maddocks for both “The Principality of Serbia 1840-1882. The Creation of the Post and Development of the Postal Routes” (also the APS pre-1900 Award of Excellence and the Chicago Collectors Club Award) and “The Kingdom of Serbia 1882-1921. Postal History under the Reign of Four Kings” (also the J. David Baker Postal History Award).
A Large Vermeil medal was awarded to Millard Mack for “Domestic Uses of the USA 1c Franklin Stamp.”
Janet Klug took a Silver Medal for “The Royal Blue Ruse” (also the AAPE Creativity Award) and a Silver Bronze medal for “The King and ‘I’ at Christmas.”
