This WSP show took place on Nov. 16-18 in Itasca, Illinois. Nicholas Kirke won the Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal for his “Outbound Foreign Mail Cancels of New York City; their Progression 1845-1877” (also the USSS Statue of Freedom award).
The members winning Large Gold Medals included Gary Hendren for “St. Louis Street Car Mail 1892-1915” (also the U. S. Cancellation Club Award); Gregory Scott Ward for “Use of U. S. Parcel Post Stamps, 1913-1926” (also the APS Medal of Excellence, 1900-1940 and the AAPE Creativity Award); and Doug Weitz for “New Orleans in the Confederate Mail System” (also the Chicago Philatelic Society Novice Award, and the USPCS Medal)
Large Vermeil Medals were award to William O. Maddocks for “the Kingdom of Serbia 1882-1921”; and Dan Undersander for the SF “Revaluing Envelopes for the 1958 Postal Rate Increase” (also the UPSS Single Frame Award).
John Rdzak won a Silver Bronze Medal for “An Ohio Volunteer” (also the AAPE Award of Excellence – Epilogue).
SESCAL
Sescal was held the weekend of October 12 in Ontario, California (outside LA). Les Lanphear III won the Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal for “U. S. Departmentals, 1873-1884” (Also the SESCAL Back of the Book Award); and Mark Schwartz won the Single Frame Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal for “The ‘Special Arrangement between Liverpool and the U.S., 1843-1848”
Mark Schwartz also won a Large Gold Medal for “The Postal History of Salem, Massachusetts” (also the APS Medal of Excellence, pre-1900, and the Postal History Society Award).
Gold Medals were won by Les Lanphear III for “New South Wales Penalty Clause Mail, 1898-1902”; and Fran Adams for “United Nations Origins 1938-1942” (also the APS Medal of Excellence, 1940-1980, the AAPE Epilog Excellence Award and the ATA First Award).
Large Vermeil Medals were awarded to Carl Shaff II for “U. S. Plate Numbers of the U. S. – 19th Century”; Caj Brejtfus for “The First Modern U. S. Postage Stamp”; and Fran Adamsfor two SF exhibits “Towards United Nation” and “The United Nations and Palestine 1947-1951″(Also the AAPE Gold Award of Honor)
Vermeil Medals were won by John Wynns for “Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Issues of British Guiana, two SF exhibits – “Japan: Centennial of the 1860 USA Treaty Issues” and “Wings over the Bahamas”.
Florex
The last WSP show of the year was held on Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in Kissimmee, Florida. USPCS members were particularly successful as they took all three top awards.
Yamil Kouri won the Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal with “The First Issues of the Spanish Antilles”. Bill DePaolo won the Reserve Grand Award and a Large Gold Medalwith “The Gentleman from Pennsylvania”. And Doug Weitz won the Single Frame Grand and a Large Gold Medal with “”New Orleans in the Confederate Mail System.”

Also winning Large Gold Medals were Alfredo Frohlich for “Colombia’s Registered Mail 1865-1925” (also the APS Award of Excellence, pre-1900); Hal Vogel for “Pioneer Period Expeditions to Greenland” (also the APS Research Award); and Bill Fort III for “”Wartime Transpacific Airmail Routes” (also the APS Award of Excellence, 1940-1980, the AAPE Award of Excellence – Epilog, and the American Air Mail Society Award).
Gold Medals were awarded to Patrick J. Pollard for “The Role of the Union Navy in the Civil War” (Also the Military Postal History Society’s Best Military Theme Award); Jim Pullin for “Great Western Steamer, First North Atlantic Liner”; and Peter LaPlaca for “The 3 cent Connecticut Tercentenary Stamp of 1936”.
A Large Vermeil Medal was won by Patrick Walters for his SF “New Jersey Pioneer Air Mail.
