Salem to Canton via Portland, London, Marseilles and Hong Kong. March 19, 1865. Allan Line Moravian, P&O Steamers Euxine, Candia, and Behar to India.
Beginning in July 1849, British mails from the U.S. to Africa, Indian and the Far East could be fully unpaid. They were routed by steamer via Marseilles and via Southampton. The Marseilles route was more expensive, but usually faster.
The rate for a 1/4-1/2 ounce letter sent via Marseilles was 53c from October 1854 to January 1857. There is a 32c credit to the U.K. for the journey from London to China, and a 1d colonial credit.
