The American Stampless Cover Catalog (ASCC) has long been the standard reference catalog of postal markings of the United States and early territories from the 1700s through the Civil War period. While previous versions of the catalog listed only markings recorded on stampless covers, the catalog is used as a reference by collectors and students of postal history, for both stamped and stampless covers.
In 2005, the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, Inc. purchased the ASCC from David G. Phillips Publishing Co., Inc. Building upon the work of Van Koppersmith, the USPCS is expanding the scope of the catalog and will publish the next generation of this work.
The new edition, currently underway, will make a number of major changes to the ASCC:
- Markings on covers through June 1, 1861, including markings only recorded on stamped covers will be included.
- The new edition will be called the American Postal Markings Catalog (APMC), reflecting this change.
- The new edition will be hosted online as a searchable database with scans and illustrations of markings, when available.
- Users of the catalog will be able to print custom versions of the APMC, reflecting their personal interests.
- Printed and bound editions of the full catalog are planned.
