In 1980, Hubert Skinner and Amos Eno edited a book titled “United States Cancellations 1845-1869.” Since that book was published, the search for new cancellations was undertaken by Charles Souder and Ed Jatho. The results of that effort are now contained on this website.
A list of chapters is below. To access the individual files in each chapter, click on it and you will see a menu of each of the individual PDFs in that chapter.

The culmination of 40 years of research by Eno, and nearly 25 by Skinner, the original book pictured the many striking, ingenious and unusual cancellations devised by nineteenth century postmasters to “kill” or “cancel” the early adhesive stamps. The full Introduction to that book can be found in the electronic copy on this website. It describes the many more modest efforts which preceded those of Skinner and Eno, and which stimulated their impressive endeavor.
The efforts of Charles Souder and Ed Jatho have added hundreds, perhaps thousands, of new cancellations to Skinner and Eno’s original publication. This section of this website illustrates both old and newly identified cancellations, using the same organization as in the original book. Besides tracings, also included are images of the cancellations on off- and on-cover adhesives.
This virtual effort will be an ongoing project. Charles Souder will continue to update these records as he finds and is made aware of new markings. We will post chapters over time, to allow for readers to comment and possible send in new markings, and for Charles Souder to review them, and to allow us to update each chapter. We hope you will enjoy this new section of our website and to appreciate the effort that Charles and Ed Jatho have made to provide us with the current level of knowledge in this area.
