Issued: Due to the introduction of the new reduced registered mail rate of 8¢ in 1893 this stamp was introduced, three years later (on March 21st 1893) than the rest of this series, earliest recorded example is 4th May, 1893. The 8¢ Columbian was issued 19 days before this stamp.

Quantity Issued: Only 12,087,800 issued.
Color: Magenta, Grayish Lilac or Lilac.
Common use: The 8¢ Sherman paid the registered mail fee.
THE INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN
The source photograph of General William Tecumseh Sherman is shown below. The choice of Sherman on the photograph was not too popular with the South. He was the only living person in the nineteenth century to be depicted on a stamp.

VARIETIES

The only known variety is the imperforate printing. There is some dispute as to if this is a proof (Scott # 225P2) or an issued stamp (Scott # 225a).
