THE INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN
The original 1870 design of Perry was based on Walcotts bust, the same vignette was used for the 1890 90¢ Perry.
Below is shown a similar marble bust of Perry by Erastus Dow Palmer, a contemporary of Walcott.
VARIETIES
The only known variety is the imperforate printing shown above.
ESSAYS AND PROOFS
As the vignette was simply recycled from the National Bank Note Company die the only requirement for the first essay was to add the United States Postage label.
