Congratulations to the USPCS members for their accomplishments at SEAPEX, Filatelic Fiesta, NOJEX, CHICAGOPEX, and FLOREX!
Back in September, USPCS members took home the Grand, Reserve Grand, and Single Frame Grand awards from SEAPEX.
Alfredo Frohlich’s Delaware Postal History 1773–1847 was awarded the Grand, along with the American Philatelic Congress Award, the APS Medal of Excellence Pre-1900, the Postal History Society Medal, and the United States Cancellation Club Award.
Reserve grand was awarded to U.S. Departmentals, 1873 to 1884 by Lester C. Lanphear III. His exhibit also received the APS Research Award and the United States Stamp Society Statue of Freedom Award.
The Single Frame Grand was awarded to Edward J. Laveroni’s St. Petersburg -Moscow Railway, Nikolaevskaya Railroad.
In addition, two other USPCS members received awards for their exhibits at SEAPEX. Tony Wawrukiewicz received Large Gold for both his exhibits, The Ways U.S. Postage Due Stamps Were Used, 1879–1986 and Operation and Innovation in the Dead Letter Office from 1860 to 1985. The Dead Letter Office exhibit also received the Collector’s Club of Chicago Award.
David Snow was awarded a Large Gold and the United Postal Stationery Society Marcus White Award for 1860–61 U.S. Star Die Postal Stationery: A Study of Uses.
The San Jose Stamp Club’s Filatelic Fiesta was November 14-15.
The show’s Grand Award went to Matthew W. Kewriga for Danish West Indies Foreign Mail to UPU.
John Barwis earned a Large Gold and the Postal History Society Award for Maritime Mail Routes From Colonial Victoria.
Pioneer Period Expeditions to Greenland by Hal Vogel won a Large Gold and the APS Research Award.
Ed Laveroni received a Gold for his single frame exhibit, San Francisco to Mt. Tamalpais,“The Crookedest Railroad in the World”. This exhibit also won the American Topical Association One Frame Award.
NOJEX was held from November 15-17 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In addition to multiple award-winning exhibits, four USPCS members exhibited in the Court of Honor.
The show’s Grand award went to Daniel M. Knowles for The Development of the Confederate States of America (CSA) Postal System from Secession to Appomattox. This exhibit also received the Postal History Society Medal.
Reserve Grand was awarded to Douglas N. and Nancy B. Clark for The Massachusetts Island Counties. Postal History to 1890. They also received the Henry Laessig Memorial Award.
Carol Ann Bommarito took home the Single Frame Reserve Grand for Transatlantic Mail U.S.-G.B. First Treaty Rates 1849-1867.
Exhibits on display in the Court of Honor were Roger Brody’s Jamestown 1907, Chip Gliedman’s The United States as Seen Through Postal History, Mark Sommer’s Parody Philately, and Mark Schwartz’s Boston’s Use of the 1847 Issue.
Larry Lyons received a Large Gold, the USSS Statue of Freedom Award, and the American Philatelic Congress Award for his multi frame exhibit, Hussey’s Post. He also received a Large Gold and USPCS Medal for his single frame exhibit, Pomeroy’s Letter Express: A Tale of Deceit, Success and Shutdown.
The State of the U.S. Mails by Lawrence Haber was awarded a Large Gold, the APS Medal of Excellence: 1900-1940 and the Philatelic Foundation Research Award.
Daniel Ryterband earned awards for three exhibits at NOJEX. Fire on the Water/Steamboat Mail in New York: 1808 to 1850 received a Large Gold and the APS Medal of Excellence: Pre-1900; Day of Infamy: The Ships of Pearl Harbor received a Large Vermeil and the ASDA President’s Award; and the single-frame The American Civil War: Adversity Uses received a Gold.
Two exhibits by Anthony F. Dewey won awards. His multi frame The 1991 “F” Tulip Stamps and their First Day Covers earned a Large Gold, the APS Medal of Excellence: post 1980, and the American First Day Cover Award. His single frame The “H” Rate Change Stamps of 1998 Depicting “Uncle Sam’s Hat” received a Large Gold and the Errors, Freaks & Oddities Collector Club 2nd.
Roger Brody earned a Gold and the APS Medal of Excellence: 1940-1980 for the multi frame exhibit Prominent American Series.
Ralph H. Nafziger’s single frame The Albany Oregon Post Office -A Century of Service: 1850-1950 earned a Large Silver and the Women Exhibitors Sterling Achievement Award.
CHICAGOPEX was held from November 22-24 and hosted both philatelic exhibits and literature competitions.
In the exhibit competition, Jan Hofmeyr won the Grand Award (Bernard Hennig Award) for The USA 3c denomination: Design and uses from 1861 to 1869. This exhibit also received the APS Research Medal, USSS Medal, USPCS Medal, and American Philatelic Congress Award.
Alfredo Frohlich received a Large Gold for Colombia – The Last Classic Issue – 1866; and James W. Milgram earned Gold for both Charging Mail to Post Office Box Accounts and Unofficial Registration of Mail in the United States 1845-1855.
Two USPCS members displayed exhibits in the Court of Honor: Philadelphia Local Posts 1843-1861 by Vernon R. Morris, Jr. MD and St. Petersburg – Moscow Railway [Nikolaevskaya Railway] by Dr. Edward J. Laveroni.
In the Literature Competition, Yamil H. Kouri, Jr. took home both the John Kevin Doyle Grand Award and the Best Postal History Award for Under Three Flags: The Postal History of the Spanish-Cuban American War (1895–1898). Reserve Grand went to Kenneth Trettin for The Congress Book 2019.
Large Golds were awarded to: The Neglected Details of Charles Steel’s Patent for Grilled Stamps and What the Brazer-Finkelburg Archive tells us about the Loewenberg Essays: 1863–66 by Jan Hofmeyr; Puerto Rico During the Spanish-American War, 1898-1900 by Bill DiPaolo; and United States Two-Cent Revenue Stamped Paper — The Civil War Designs by Bob Hohertz.
Gold was awarded to Florida Postal History 1763–1861 by Deane R. Briggs, M.D., Frances Ferguson, and Thomas M. Lera; Private Die Proprietary Stamps — (The “Match and Medicine” stamps) and Prexie Covers — Solo Uses by Bob Hohertz; and State Revenue News by Robert Conley.
A Large Vermeil was awarded to Diane DeBlois and Robert Dalton Harris for the Postal History Journal.
Vermeil were awarded to Jan Hofmeyr for www.philatelicessays.org; and Melanie Rogers for the German Colonies Collectors Group Website.
The final WSP show of 2019, FLOREX was held December 13-15.
Charles Wooster took home the Grand Award for The Postage Due Stamps of Peru 1874.
Alfredo Frohlich earned a Large Gold and the APS Award of Excellence: Pre-1900 for The United States of Colombia 1868-1881; and earned a Gold and USPCS award for Wilmington Delaware Postal History 1787 to 1883.
Pioneer Expeditions to Greenland by Hal Vogel received a Large Gold and APS Research Award.
